Choosing the Best Franchise for You

You may be investigating the option of buying a franchise, but getting lost among all the available options. It is a big decision, and you cannot afford to make a bad choice. How do you know which is the best franchise for you? How do you know if it is really as profitable as they claim? And how do you make sense of the franchise agreement? Big questions, tough choices

First, let''s look at profitability. Do you see a market where you want to open up shop? How many other competing businesses are around? Would having the franchise give you any advantage? Or is the population large enough to sustain another similar business? Many times it seems as if a market is saturated, but closer scrutiny reveals that the existing suppliers cannot keep up with the demand.

It is possible for franchises to saturate a given market. Although it may be difficult to come to an exact conclusion for your specific location, you can look at national trends. See if the growth factors for the particular industry are rising, or declining. Declining figures mean that the market penetration is reaching saturation point, and you could end up buying a business that will lose its profitability soon. A proven track record alone does not mean it''s the best franchise anymore.

When you scrutinize the franchise agreement, see if it is one-sided. Does it protect your rights? Are there any clauses that could turn their problems into your problems? A good example would be the right to find an alternative supplier if the franchise supplier cannot deliver. Does the agreement cover everything in detail, or is it just a general document? Talk it over with a franchise lawyer - it will be money well spent.

Another consideration is the support structure and the training provided for you or your manager, and the staff. Sometimes, companies are only interested in selling you the franchise, offering little support when you really need it. Talk to other owners of the same franchise, even if it is someone in another city. You will quickly be able to form an idea of the company''s mode of operation.

In a nutshell: Determine the demand, scrutinize the agreement, and get first hand information from other franchise owners. Only then will you be able to decide if it''s the best franchise for you.
